How to Start a Career in Event Management in Dubai (2026 Reality Check)

July 4, 2026 4 min read ORO Events Dubai ยท Riyadh

Search data says a surprising share of people googling “event management” in the UAE aren’t buying events — they’re trying to get into them. Fair enough: this is one of the region’s genuinely growing industries, on both sides of the Dubai–Riyadh corridor. Here’s the honest map, from people who read the CVs.

What the job actually is

Event management is logistics wearing creativity’s clothes. The romance is the reveal; the profession is the run sheet — suppliers chased, permits filed, timings enforced, problems absorbed before clients feel them. If you need public credit to feel rewarded, produce content instead. If a calm 02:00 load-in satisfies something in you, welcome.

The four real career paths

1 · Production & operations

Coordinator → producer → senior producer/project director. The spine of the industry. Entry coordinators in Dubai are commonly advertised in the AED 5–9k/month range; experienced producers 15–28k; senior project directors beyond — treat these as commonly-advertised ranges, not promises, and note that agencies pay in experience density what they withhold in salary early on.

2 · Technical

AV operators, LED techs, riggers, show callers. Scarce, certifiable, borderless — a good show caller works both countries and never advertises. Certifications and manufacturer trainings compound here.

3 · Client & commercial

Account management, sponsorship sales, venue sales. The path for people who like events but love deals; it feeds many eventual agency founders.

4 · Event HSE — the one nobody tells you about

The fastest-rising specialisation in the region. Venues and authorities increasingly require named, certified safety officers on builds; supply hasn’t caught up. A NEBOSH IGC plus genuine event hours makes you employable across every production company in the Gulf — including ours. If you’re analytical, calm and allergic to chaos, this is the arbitrage.

Certifications worth the money (and the ones that aren’t)

  • Worth it: NEBOSH IGC / IOSH Managing Safely (HSE path), first aid, rigging & working-at-height tickets (technical), a project-management fundamentals course, and Arabic — the single most underrated career asset for the KSA decade.
  • Situational: hospitality/event-management degrees open interviews; they don’t survive them alone.
  • Skip: expensive “certified event planner” badges from online academies nobody in a hiring seat has heard of. Ask any producer.

How hiring actually works here

Portfolios beat papers: a tight document of events you touched — your role, the scale, one problem you solved — outperforms any template CV. Freelancing is the industry’s side door: registration desks, brand-ambassador shifts and crew calls put you inside real events within weeks, where the full-time offers actually happen. Season matters: hiring spikes ahead of Q4 in the UAE and ahead of the Riyadh Season; apply in August, not December.

“Should I just start my own event company in Dubai?”

The other half of the search data. Honest version: the licence is the easy part — mainland or free-zone trade licence with an events activity, achievable in days. The business is the hard part: this is a working-capital industry (you pay suppliers before clients pay you), reputation compounds slowly, and your first year’s real product is trust. The viable founder path we actually see: 3–5 years inside good companies → a specialisation clients ask for by name → then the licence. Companies started from a certificate and enthusiasm mostly become cautionary invoices.
